Evaluating accessibility through simulating the experiences of user users with vision or motor impairments

چکیده
User studies involving users with disabilities often incur greater financial cost and complexity than those involving general populations. One consequence of this is that accessibility issues may not be identified during the earlier phases of design, when designs are still malleable. Additionally, it can be difficult to create controlled studies with multiple groups of very similar subjects due to the extremely heterogeneous nature of the impact of many motor and visual disabilities. This paper examines the feasibility of simulating the interaction experiences of users with low vision and/or motor impairments. We developed a tool, EASE (Evaluating Accessibility through Simulation of User Experience), based on empirical studies in the literature of the impact of these impairments on the experience of computer use. EASE can help developers identify disability-related usability problems early in the design process. EASE can also be used to allow fine grained exploration of user capabilities that are difficult to account for, such as typing speed. We present a study of the use of word prediction software, illustrating the value of fine-grained control over typing speed, and showing that word prediction is most useful at typing speeds between 5 and 8 words per minute.

متن کاملHolistic accessibility evaluation using VR simulation of users with special needs
In this paper, we present a novel methodology to evaluate the accessibility of products using virtual prototypes. The novelty is that the product evaluation is based on simulating the interactions of users with physical deficiencies in virtual and immersive environments. Virtual users with special needs, e.g. elderly or impaired people, were modelled using both literature data and real subjects...
متن کاملHands-free vision-based interface for computer accessibility
Physically disabled and mentally challenged people are an important part of our society that has not yet received the same opportunities as others in their inclusion in the Information Society. Therefore, it is necessary to develop easily accessible systems for computers to achieve their inclusion within the new technologies. This paper presents a project whose objective is to draw disabled peo...

متن کاملNovel Virtual User Models of Mild Cognitive Impairment for Simulating Dementia
Virtual user modeling research has attempted to address critical issues of human-computer interaction (HCI) such as usability and utility through a large number of analytic, usability-oriented approaches as cognitive models in order to provide users with experiences fitting to their specific needs. However, there is demand for more specific modules embodied in cognitive architecture that will d...
